Flavors of Kunming

Kunming has a specialty bread – similar to a moon cake – but traditionally filled with rose flavored filling (see first photo). But rose, to me, tastes like potpourri and potpourri reminds me of old ladies. So while I’m munching, all sorts of images conjure themselves up – of large hats with protruding feathers, lipstick marks on beverage glasses, and the potpourri in old-style lady’s restrooms. It’s not particularly appetizing especially when juxtaposed to ancient Chinese culture. So I couldn’t finish it.

The same bakery also had tiny rolls with rose filling. The bland dough is probably made of rice flour and the consistency is very soft and sticky. The rose flavor was subtle so I thought they tasted pretty good. Not as yummy as cinnamon rolls, but alright.

However, the final photos show ba ba, which is not only fun to say but also tasty. The particular one that I ordered had peanut filling. Naturally, it was hot and delicious. A truly worthy vehicle for peanut butter.
